Key customers for Standard Grade — India
Rubber compounders: MRF, Apollo, CEAT, JK Tyre (general grade rubber). Volume buyers: 200–500 MT/order. Existing suppliers: PPG Industries India, Gujarat Silica Industries.
Animal feed: Big-Dutchman, Evonik (feed grade carrier). Standard PS is used as free-flow agent in feed premixes. Annual contracts: 50–200 MT/year/customer.
Price reality: ₹26/kg domestic market is competitive — established players at ₹22–24/kg. Your differentiation: RHA source (circular economy story), DPIIT startup status, local Telangana supply. Focus on HDS grade (₹45–50) as primary target — Standard is fallback for off-spec batches.

| Tint strength | ASTM D3265 (IOR method) | Typically 120–140% | ≥130% | Whiteness/optical property — customer preference |
| Silicon dioxide purity | XRF | ≥97% | ≥98.5% | — |
Why CTAB value is the critical test for HDS grade
BET measures TOTAL surface area (including internal pore walls that rubber cannot access). CTAB measures only the EXTERNAL surface area — the surface that actually interfaces with rubber polymer. For green tyre performance, CTAB ≥175 mg/g is the industry standard (Evonik Ultrasil 7000 GR, PPG Hi-Sil 255, Solvay Zeosil Premium 200 MP are the benchmarks).
The CIPD test (Cabot In-Polymer Dispersion Test) measures how well the silica disperses in a rubber formulation — it requires a rubber lab (send to ATIRA Ahmedabad or Rubber Technology Centre, IIT Kharagpur). Cost: ₹5,000–15,000/test. Required for tyre manufacturer qualification.
Tyre manufacturer qualification process — what to expect
Step 1 (Month 11): Send 5 kg sample to tech centre of target customer (Apollo Tyres Baroda, CEAT Ltd Mumbai, MRF Kottayam). Include CoA with CTAB, BET, D50, moisture.
Step 2 (Month 12–14): Customer runs internal compounding trials. Measures: mooney viscosity, vulcanisation rate, tensile strength, tan δ (rolling resistance proxy). Process: 2–3 months.
Step 3 (Month 14–16): If compounding trials pass: qualification audit of plant (IATF/TS 16949 preferred but not mandatory initially). Environmental audit.
Step 4 (Month 16–18): First purchase order — typically 20–50 MT trial order, then scale up if performance consistent.

Toothpaste grade — market intelligence
India toothpaste market: ₹12,000 Cr annually, growing 8–10%/yr. Silica content in toothpaste: 15–25% by weight. Major buyers: Colgate-Palmolive, Hindustan Unilever (Pepsodent), Dabur, GSK India.
Import substitute opportunity: India imports ~₹180 Cr/yr of dental silica (primarily from Evonik Germany, PPG USA). Price: ₹150–250/kg CIF. Fluxara at ₹90–95/kg is competitive even against domestic Evonik pricing of ₹110–130/kg.
Qualification timeline: FSSAI application (Month 12) → FSSAI approval (Month 24–30) → Customer trials (3–6 months) → First purchase (Month 33–36). Conservative model: dental revenue from Year 3 (Month 36).
| Parameter | Spec | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Purity (CaCO₃) | ≥97% | XRF — residual Ca(OH)₂ and NaOH must be washed out |
| d50 (sedimentation or laser) | 1–3 µm | Target 2 µm from causticisation; no additives needed |
| Brightness (ISO) | ≥90% (coatings) · ≥93% (paper) | White PCC only — any grey indicates iron contamination |
| Oil absorption | 28–35 g/100g | For paints — higher means more oil/binder needed |
| pH (10% slurry) | 8.5–10.0 | CaCO₃ is naturally alkaline |
| Moisture (dried) | <0.5% | For dry powder product |
| Free lime (Ca(OH)₂) | <0.2% | Excess lime causes paint darkening and adhesion issues |
| Heavy metals | Pb ≤10 ppm · Total ≤50 ppm | For interior paint compliance |
| Parameter | Spec | Test Method | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| d50 | 0.6–0.9 µm | Sedimentation or laser | Finer than coatings grade — requires second-stage hydrocyclone |
| Stearic acid coating | 1.8–2.2% by weight | TGA loss 200–450°C | Primary quality parameter for sealant grade |
| Dispersibility (flotation) | Floats on water surface | Floatation test: 1g on water | Hydrophobic coated PCC floats; uncoated sinks. Quick pass/fail. |
| BET surface area | 15–25 m²/g | N₂ BET | Lower than PS — coarse, massive crystals |
| Oil absorption | 45–70 g/100g | ASTM D281 | For sealant rheology design |
| Crystal form | Scalenohedral | XRD or SEM | Scalenohedral (star-shaped) gives best thixotropy |
| Residual moisture | <0.2% | 105°C/2hr | Moisture in sealant causes foaming and adhesion failure |
Sealant grade — market intelligence
Silicone sealant market India: ₹2,400 Cr/yr growing 15%/yr (construction boom, automotive glazing). PCC content in silicone sealant: 30–45% by weight. Key buyers: Wacker Chemie (India), Momentive, Asian Paints Silicone, Capricon Chemicals.
Import context: Coated nano-PCC imported from China at ₹22–28/kg CIF. Fluxara at ₹26/kg with local supply advantage and no import duty exposure → competitive. Focus on "Made in India" premium and supply chain reliability.
